This is an actual conversation I had tonight and just shows me how much work there is to do to help people.
Me: introduced to person.
Person: My wife made me come here all the way from Tarpon Springs (about 45 min drive). I really need to talk to someone who knows about eating so I can lose 20 pounds but I won’t give up booze or soda but I drink Pepsi Next which is like 60 calories so it’s better. I think I just need to control portions but I love Italian and Japanese.
Me: Eating whole foods that aren’t processed would be a good start and if you must eat the food you’re eating there are healthy alternatives that taste good.
Him: Well I travel so I always eat in restaurants and have a drink or a few after a long day at work.
Me: You could always stop at a Whole Foods or another healthy place that prepares meals.
Him: Well I could just do that here too. I look forward to that drink or a few drinks.
Me: Also, most hotels have gyms so you could get your exercise in.
Him: Well I get up at 5:30 to work and work until about 6:30 pm. Then I have to go to the restaurant and eat and have some drinks. After that I’m too wiped out to go to the hotel gym.
Me: You could always take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Him: My knees hurt if I walk up stairs but I can do a stairmaster.
Moral of the story?
When someone is in enough pain or humiliation or their life is so bad from being unhealthy only then will they be ready to do WHATEVER IT TAKES and listen to the person or people that can help them get better. This person obviously isn’t ready and that’s ok. I totally understand and can relate from my own struggle with my health. I am going to keep doing what I’m doing and when he’s ready I’ll be there to help. Hopefully it’s not too late when it happens but that’s always a possibility.
What is your WHY? What are you willing to sacrifice to get healthy?
