Discipline and Commitment!!

One of the things I’ve found with myself and with clients is the lack of discipline. Whether it’s with nutrition, technique or getting motivated doesn’t really matter since the end results will be the same. I will revert to where I was 1 year ago and I don’t want to go there. Being fat and out of shape was so much less enjoyable than the life I live now.

Having been into “fitness” before I did have a lot of knowledge BUT I was never truly healthy. I would go to the gym and lift a lot of heavy weights and I got really big. The problem with that was first of all my body fat was way too high. Secondly, with COPD my lung function was deteriorating because I was a heavy smoker even while working out at the gym. As I got older I got away from going to the gym at all. Combine this with an extremely poor diet and the results are a 42 year old overweight smoker who can’t go up one flight of stairs without stopping to get a breath.

When I began with Team Beachbody at 234 pounds and 29% body fat I was living a very miserable life. There was so much I couldn’t do and with depression I really didn’t WANT to do anything. I had quit smoking a year prior but that added the weight because food now tasted better.

The first part of my fitness journey was making the decision to get started on nutrition and working out. I had to decide that I’d had enough of the way I was living and WANT to change it!!

Having been introduced to a couple coaches for Beachbody, I now had a willingness to try something new that could possibly help me. It also helps that they were there to help motivate me and hold me accountable. This is not to say they would do the work because they couldn’t but what they did was talked me up and made sure I set appointments to meet for a group workout with them. The motivation was now external and I couldn’t block those voices out.

Making the commitment to improve my life has been instrumental. Once I got started with the workouts, Shakeology and eating better I began to feel better. My quality of life has improved dramatically and the depression is gone. There are many days where I can tell myself I don’t need to keep going or it’s just one day off or a myriad of other excuses not to do it. I have to constantly recommit to my programs and maintain the discipline that got me to where I’m at in my fitness journey.

Being a Beachbody coach myself is another blessing. Helping other people get started and motivating them has helped keep my discipline and commitment. How can I show other people that it can be done if I don’t do the work myself.

Sometimes it’s hard but I like looking at myself in the mirror today and the way I feel is incredible. Now it’s a matter of maintaining that discipline and commitment to achieve my new goals.
